LANDMARK LAMBORGHINIS CHARGE INTO
BONHAMS BOND STREET SALE
A duo of landmark Lamborghinis, a 1969 Miura P400 S Coupe, and a 1981 Countach LP400 S Coupé, both offered from long-term ownership by the same family, will bring a little ‘dolce vita’ to the Bonhams Bond Street Sale, the finale of the Bonhams Collector Car Calendar on 16 December in London
Leading the charge is the Miura, Lamborghini’s distinctive first mid-engine sports model which put the Italian firm on the map as a luxury sports car maker. This matching numbers, right-hand drive car with striking red and gold livery, has covered 14,500 miles from new, with its first owner being the colourful aristocrat and heir to the Scottish banking family George De Vere Drummond, (Godson of George VI, backer of Radio Caroline, former racing driver and team owner and later revealed as the father of film director Matthew Vaughn).
The Miura is offered from long-term ownership, having been acquired by a respected Sheffield-based classic car dealer in 1995. It has an estimate of £800,000-1,000,000 with No Reserve.
Its successor Countach is the essence of a 1970s supercar, its flamboyant wedge-shape with instantly recognisable scissor doors, also designed by the Miura’s creator Gandini, appealing to owners such as rock star Rod Stewart. This left-hand drive 1981 ‘S’ version is powered by the Miura’s 4.0-litre engine, with the optional V-shape spoiler and ‘telephone dial’ wheels. Owned by the same late custodian as the Miura since 1985, this left-hand drive Countach is another low-mileage car, having covered 6,200kms from new. It has an estimate of £280,000-340,000, also at No Reserve.
Sholto Gilbertson, International Senior Specialist, Bonhams Collector Cars , said:
“Bonhams is honoured to have been entrusted by the late owner’s family to present and offer these beautifully preserved supercars.”
Another powerful pair lining up in New Bond Street are two flagship supercars from the Mercedes-Benz stable: a 2007 SLR McLaren 722 Edition Coupé, estimate £350,000 – 550,000 , and its soft-top sibling, a 2009 SLR McLaren 722 S Roadster (estimate £400,000-600,000 ). Showcasing the combined engineering excellence of Mercedes-Benz and its then Formula 1 partner McLaren, the sportier 722 variants were an homage to Stirling Moss’ 300 SLR in which he won the 1955 Mille Miglia with start number ‘722’. Both cars are one of a limited edition of 150.
The boutique Bond Street Sale will present 30 classic and collectors’ motor cars, representing such luxury marques as Aston Martin, Bentley, McLaren, Porsche and Rolls-Royce, as well as a selection of automobilia at Bonhams flagship New Bond Street saleroom, with other highlights including:
2014 Mercedes-Benz AMG G63 6×6, £300,000 – 500,000
The ultra-rare, luxurious high-performance off-roader powered by a twin-turbo V8 5.5-litre AMG engine. This vehicle has covered just over 100 miles from new.
1989 Aston Martin V8 Volante X-Pack, £270,000 – 350,000
One of only 166 Vantage Volantes produced, with the more potent optional 432bhp engine ‘X pack’.
2001 Lamborghini Diablo VT 6.0 SE Coupé, £120,000 – 180,000.
The Countach’s replacement, the Diablo was the first Lamborghini to break the 200mph barrier. Only 42 examples of the swansong SE variant, considered the ultimate Diablo, were produced.
