LONDON, England – RM Sotheby’s powers towards its annual Paris sale with over 70 mouthwatering lots representing over 70 years of automotive history. An established feature of the Paris sale is the eclectic selection of cars that will appeal to the broadest spectrum of collectors, with the live sale taking place on 2 February at Sotheby’s, Paris.
With the previously announced Petitjean Collection of 28 Ferraris, the Maranello marque is the undoubted star attraction in Paris, and swelling the prancing horse ranks of irresistible exotica is the 1996 Ferrari F50, the 140th of the 349 examples made. Ferrari Classiche certified and boasting just 12,722 km on its odometer at the time of cataloguing, this exceptional example of one of Ferrari’s most sought-after cars of the modern era is offered with original Ferrari handbooks and manuals, tool kit, and F50-branded flight cases. One of the most collectable supercars in today’s market, this example is one of the best available (Estimate: €2,800,000 – €3,200,000).
With only 70 examples produced, the DB4 Convertible is one of Aston Martin’s most desirable models of the David Brown era, and the 1963 Aston Martin DB4 Convertible is one of only 12 cars known to be shipped to the United States, and as such is one of only 21 examples originally constructed in left-hand-drive. Featuring the uprated Special Series “SS” engine, this DB4 develops 266 bhp and is thought to be one of only seven “SS” powered convertibles (Estimate: €1,250,000 – €1,500,000).
Certainly amongst the most sought-after of all 1950s sports cars, the sale features an exceptional 1958 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster, which has enjoyed long-term ownership throughout its life. A matching-numbers car, chassis 8500137 was fully restored in 1995 in its period correct silver paintwork and a desirable factory hardtop. The car is accompanied by a history report along with a copy of the factory data card (Estimate: €800,000 – €1,000,000).
One of the rarest and most exotic cars to emerge from Italy in the 1950s is the sculptural 1954 Fiat 8V Coupé, a model recognised for avant-garde design and one of the most collectable models of its period. With production spanning only two years between 1952 and 1954, a mere 114 examples were produced. Of those 114 examples, only 29 second-series cars were built, including the example offered in Paris (chassis no. 000104). This fine and exotic Fiat boasts an exceptional ownership history, still retains its matching-numbers engine, and is estimated at €825,000 – €925,000.
Few sports cars of the period share the exotic and purposeful lines of the 1970 Maserati Ghibli 4.7 Spyder, one of the most glamorous, high-performance convertibles of its era. Accompanied by a Certificate of Origin by Maserati Classiche, the car is fresh from a bare metal respray which was completed in 2021 by a marque specialist. Being one of 83 cars fitted with the 4.7-litre V8 engine, this matching-numbers example is a rare collectible (Estimate: €580,000 – €700,000).
Opportunities to acquire successful modern-era Formula 1 cars are rare, and even rare are those piloted by World Champion drivers. An undoubted highlight of the Paris sale is the 2004 Renault R24, an iconic points-scoring Formula 1 chassis, piloted by none less than Fernando Alonso, an icon of the sport and commonly regarded as one of the finest drivers to participate at the highest level of motorsport. Taking pole position in its maiden race, the R24 was competitive from the start and chassis R24-07 was raced by Alonso in the final three races of the 2004 season, placing 4th, 5th, and 4th respectively. The R24 will cross the block in the classic „Mild Seven“ livery (Estimate: €350,000 – €450,000).
